Field Station to Dedicate Memorial Garden Oct. 4

Posted on Wednesday, September 24, 2014

The Westminster College Field Station will dedicate the Margaret "Meg" Rankin Memorial Garden and Nursery Saturday, Oct. 4, at 3 p.m.  The event, at 937 Fayette-New Wilmington Road, is open to the public.

Rankin, a 1986 Westminster alumna, was a fourth-grade teacher in Rhode Island.  An outdoor enthusiast and avid gardener, she took her students outside the classroom as often as possible.  Following Rankin's death from breast cancer in 2010, her mother met with Dr. Clarence Harms, Westminster professor of biology emeritus and director of the Field Station, biology department faculty, and other Westminster representatives concerning an appropriate memorial.

The garden is a half-acre fenced-in plot that includes: a community garden with 22 plots maintained by 35 gardeners; a children's garden for butterflies and nature play; areas for classes to plant; and a nursery to grow seedlings for transplanting at the Field Station and on Westminster's campus.

"Consider yourself invited to visit the Field Station and help commemorate a life well lived," Harms said.

The garden is the most recent addition to the Field Station, which includes the Lucile Frey Nature Trail, Sandy Edmiston Labyrinth, William and Virginia Offutt Microforest, and the Robert Travis Weather Station.
