Posted on Monday, September 15, 2014

Westminster College's Department of Chemistry will host Janet Bryant for the seventh annual Ken and Nancy Long Chemistry Lecture Friday, Sept. 26, at 8 p.m. in the Witherspoon Rooms of the McKelvey Campus Center.  The program is free and open to the public.

Bryant's presentation, "WHY Women?...WHY Now?...WHY it's Important to STEM and the Global Economy," will highlight the issues and skillsets key to the success of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) women, including negotiation, communication styles, mentoring and leadership within a team environment.

Bryant is a senior systems and science policy analyst and project manager at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, a premier Department of Energy multi-program national laboratory.  She is a leader for innovation and delivers entrepreneurial and soft-skill training for scientists and engineers to help create jobs and sustainable careers.  She chairs the American Chemical Society's Chemical Innovation and Entrepreneurship Council and was the organization's Richland Section Chemist of the Year in 2013.

The lecture series is funded by Dr. Ken Long, Westminster professor of chemistry emeritus, and his wife, Nancy, to invite outstanding chemists to speak to Westminster students.
