Education Major Brings Little Free Library to New Wilmington

Posted on Thursday, September 11, 2014

Hannah Roscoe, Westminster College sophomore early childhood/special education major, spearheaded the effort to bring a Little Free Library to New Wilmington Borough.

According to Little Free Library's website, "It's a ‘take a book, return a book' gathering place where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories. In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another book to share."

Located on South Market Street next to Huntington Bank, the New Wilmington structure was privately funded.  New Wilmington borough council accepted it as a gift from Westminster and approved its installation.  It is intended for children's books appropriate for newborns through elementary students.  No fees are involved and borrowing is based on the honor system.

"I got the idea from my mom, a teacher in Ohio who had these libraries brought to the town where she teaches," Roscoe said.  "I thought it would be good for New Wilmington, so we worked together to bring one here."

Roscoe is a daughter of Kurt and Jodi Roscoe of Solon, Ohio, and a graduate of Solon High School.

Donations of children's books for the Little Free Library are accepted at the front desk of Westminster's McGill Library.
