International Film Series to Resume Sept. 30

Posted on Tuesday, September 9, 2014

Westminster College's Jake Erhardt International Film Series will resume Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater.  The program is free and open to the public.

Jon Shenk's 2011 documentary, The Island President, follows Pres. Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives, the lowest-lying country in the world.  After bringing democracy to his homeland, Nasheed is fighting to keep it from disappearing under the sea.

The film, in English, includes locations in Denmark, England, India and New York as well as the Maldives.

Westminster seniors Mark Eck and Jordan Locke will introduce the film and lead a short discussion after the viewing.

Eck, a communication studies major, is a son of Lois Wholey, Pittsburgh, and Mark Eck, Verona.  He is a graduate of Horace Mann School.

Locke, an English major, is a son of Thomas and Annette Locke of Gibsonia and a graduate of Deer Lakes High School.

Additional films are scheduled for Oct. 21 and Nov. 18.

The International Film Series is named in honor of its founder, Dr. Jacob Erhardt, professor of German emeritus at Westminster College.  Erhardt, who taught at Westminster from 1968 until his retirement in 2004, served as chair of his department from 1970-1986, was named the Language Educator of the Year by the Pennsylvania State Modern Languages Association, translated into English Robert Reitzel's Adventures of a Greenhorn, and was recognized by the National Endowment for the Humanities as an outstanding member.

Contact Dr. Deborah Mitchell, professor and chair of Westminster's Department of English and public relations and coordinator of the film series, at 724-946-7030 or email for more information.
