Seven New Members Elected to Westminster College's Board of Trustees

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College Board of Trustees added seven members to the class 2017, including three first-time trustees.

Trustees Doreen McCall (third term), John Weisel `79 (fourth term), and Jeffrey Wiley `75 (third term) have been re-elected to the Board. Thomas Tupitza `79 will continue to serve as chairman of the Board.

Three faculty associate trustees were re-elected for 2013: Dr. Bethany Hicok (second term), associate professor of English, Dr. Terri Lenox (third term), professor of computer science, and Dr. David Swerdlow (second term), professor and chair of the Department of English and Public Relations.

New to the nearly 40-member Board in 2013 are Ashley Davis `97, Harold Hartley III `79, and Jeffrey McCandless `80.

Davis, of Washington, D.C., is the managing principal of Blank Rome Government Relations LLC, an international law firm specializing in government and corporate relations. Previously, she served as special assistant to the director of Homeland Security, deputy director of management and administration at the White House, and as a senior associate at Greenlee Partners in Harrisburg.

Davis earned her undergraduate degree in public relations from Westminster.  In 2003 the College honored her with the Young Alumni Award in recognition of her many accomplishments and civic activities including participation with the Republication National Committee, Republican Governor's Association, Women in International Trade, and St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C.

Hartley, of Locust Grove, Va., is senior vice president of the Council for Independent Colleges (CIC), a national organization representing more than 650 private liberal arts colleges and universities. Previously, he was vice president of research/evaluation for the CIC. He also served as director of student ministries for the General Board of the United Methodist Church, chaplain at Ohio Northern University and at Emory and Henry College, and as a pastor in several churches.

Hartley earned his undergraduate degree in religion and music at Westminster, a master of divinity at Wesley Theological Seminary and a doctor of education at Vanderbilt University. He is involved in Habitat for Humanity, Friends of the Wilderness Battlefield, and volunteers as a parent/school volunteer.

McCandless, of Washington, D.C., is a managing partner with Stone Harbour Partners, a management consulting firm that provides business development and leadership services to entrepreneurs, emerging and turn-around companies, and venture capital and institutional investors. Previously, he served in senior executive positions with several technology companies, including MasTech Corporation of Pittsburgh and Winner International of Sharon.

McCandless earned his undergraduate degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting, and subsequently earned a CPA license. Recently, Westminster College honored him with the Distinguished Alumni Award in recognition of his many accomplishments and civic activities, including with McLean Bible Church in Virginia.

Four new student associate trustees were elected for 2013: Ashley Downey `09, Christian Friday, Emily Puruczky, and Emily Wiest.

Downey, of Pittsburgh, is the assistant marketing manager for the Giant Eagle Corporation. Previously, she was a brand assistant. She earned her undergraduate degree in business administration from Westminster and an MBA at the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie-Mellon University. Downey serves on Giant Eagle's Women's Business Resource group, is a member of the Young Professionals Organization, and is on the United Way Planning Committee.

Friday, a junior political science and religion major, is a son of Brian and Michele Friday, both from the class of `93, and a graduate of Bethel Park High School. He is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, serves as a student associate on the Westminster Board of Trustees, is a senator in the Student Government Association, the fundraising chair for the Student Alumni Association, and a member of the track and field team.

Puruczky, a junior communication studies major, is a daughter of Dale and Ann Puruczky of Chesterland, Ohio, and a graduate of West Geauga High School. She is a member of Alpha Gamma Delta and is involved in more than 20 activities and organizations. She is president of the Campus Programming Council, special events chair of the Student Government Association, and vice president of Student Alumni Association.

Wiest, a senior early childhood/special education major, is a daughter of Scott and Sharon Wiest and a graduate of Saint Marys Area High School. She is the president of the Student Government Association, the alumni relations coordinator for Alpha Gamma Delta, public relations chair for the Student Alumni Association, and is a member of the Disability Awareness Club.
