Westminster College to Honor America's Heroes Nov. 9

Posted on Monday, October 29, 2012

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Westminster College's Office of Faith and Spirituality will host a special worship service honoring America's veterans Friday, Nov. 9, at 11:40 a.m. in Orr Auditorium. The service is open to the community.

The service will feature guest speaker Iraq veteran Sergeant First Class (SFC) Raymond Corvino. He is the Senior Enlisted Logistical Advisor to the Battalion Commander and Administrative Officer of the 1st Battalion 107th Field Artillery Regiment of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

SFC Corvino served in Operation Iraqi Freedom during the surge and was part of the first area of operations controlled by an all National Guard Command. He has earned 23 awards and decorations during his 25 years in the service.  SFC Corvino is the father of current Westminster College student Joshua Corvino.

Patriotic music will be performed by the Westminster Wind Ensemble and Combined Choirs; and there will be a slide show honoring alumni, alumni spouses, students, faculty, staff and administration of the College who have served in the armed forces.

The event is being coordinated by Dr. Scott Mackenzie, associate professor, director of theatre, and a veteran who served in Iraq; with help from Dr. Kirk Lunnen, associate professor of psychology and a lieutenant colonel in the United States Air Force Reserves.

"I am so pleased that the long-held tradition of remembering Veterans' Day is returning to Westminster," Lunnen said. "Many Westminster Titans and others in the community currently serve, or have served and died over the years to protect the freedoms that we enjoy.  The Veterans' Day service will be a celebration of these great individuals who have exemplified the spirit of Westminster and community through their dedication and sacrifice."

Contact Mackenzie at (724) 946-6238 or email for more information.

Please enjoy this brief recognition of the people of Westminster who have helped to shape history and provide the freedoms that allow so many of us to enjoy the opportunities offered by the college.
