NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College Department of Education will host "I Am Moving, I Am Learning" Oct. 22 at 11:40 a.m. in the Witherspoon Maple Room of the McKelvey Campus Center. The event is free to the public.

"I Am Moving, I Am Learning" is a national pre-school initiative that promotes healthy habits and active learning in early childhood and will be presented by Joe Smith, a national board certified teacher in physical education and trainer for the program. He will speak on the importance of physically and mentally engaging young children in their learning.

Smith has more than 30 years teaching experience in science, mathematics, social studies and physical education in Pre-K and grades K-9. He has received several honors and awards, including: Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year in West Virginia for 2003, Wood County Teacher of the Year for 2009-2010, and was a West Virginia State Finalist for Teacher of the Year 2009-2010. Smith earned a master's in physical education/teacher education from West Virginia University.

The "I Am Moving, I Am Learning" initiative was started in 2005 by the Office of the Administration for Children and Families as part of Head Start - a federal program intended to ensure that children from low-income families are prepared for school by promoting language and literacy, cognition and general knowledge, physical development and health, and social and emotional development.

The mission of the education department at Westminster College is to prepare early childhood/special education and secondary teachers who are distinguished by their subject matter knowledge, interpersonal capacities, pedagogical skills, and professional attitudes.
