Senior Language Majors Took Fifth-Graders on Virtual "World Tour"

Five seniors in Westminster College's Language in Motion program made presentations April 2-3 at the Wilmington Area Middle School that took more than 100 fifth-grade students on a virtual "Trip around the World."

International politics and Spanish major Stella Campbell compared the governments of Spain and the United States.  Campbell is a daughter of Daniel and Ana Campbell of Montgomery and a graduate of Montgomery Area High School.

English major Addison Domske shared "United Kingdom 101," based on her study abroad experience.  Domske is a daughter of Ronee Christy of Oil City and a graduate of Wilmington Area High School.

Spanish major Caitlyn Paternoster-Bové taught students both the vocabulary and the dance moves associated with Salsa.  Paternoster-Bové is a daughter of Christine Bové of Blossburg and a graduate of North Penn High School.

French major Kimberly Pavilonis told how April Fool's Day is celebrated in France.  Pavilonis is a daughter of Michael and Mary Pavilonis of McKees Rocks and a graduate of Montour High School.

Spanish major Marlee Tonks presented "Bongiorno Italia," a basic Italian history and the differences between northern and southern Italy.  Tonks is a daughter of Floyd and Cindy Tonks of Greenville and a graduate of Greenville High School.

Language in Motion is coordinated by Milagros Swerdlow, Westminster Spanish lecturer.  The presentations were the result of collaborations with the school district's fifth-grade teachers, Mrs. Domalik, Mrs. Gill, Mrs. Moore, Ms. Shaw, and Ms. Watson.

Language in Motion is an innovative outreach program that gives study-abroad returnees, international students, and upper-level language students the opportunity to create language and cultural activities for presentation in K-12 language, social studies, and other classes where culture can be studied.

Westminster's Language in Motion program is sponsored by Westminster's Department of Modern Languages, Drinko Center for Experiential Learning, and the Heritage Chair of Humanities.
