Theatre Westminster to Present Shakespearean Comedy April 12-15

Posted on Tuesday, April 3, 2012

Theatre Westminster will present As You Like It, one of Shakespeare's most popular comedies, April 12-15 in Beeghly Theater.

The play tells the story of Rosalind, daughter of the exiled duke, who must flee the duchy.  Disguising herself as a boy and accompanied by her cousin Celia and the jester Touchstone, Rosalind seeks refuge in the Forest of Arden, where her father and some of his attendants have made a home.  Orlando, who loves and is loved by Rosalind, is also banished and finds his way to the forest.  After a series of confused and comic encounters between Rosalind, Orlando, Touchstone, and the denizens of the forest, true identities are revealed and love and justice prevail.

Curtain time Thursday-Saturday is 7:30 p.m.; Sunday's matinee is at 2:30 p.m.  Reservations can be made online by following the "ticket reserve" link here or by calling the Box Office at (724) 946-7241.  Prices for general admission adults are $10, and senior citizens and non-Westminster students are $7.

The production is under the direction of guest artist Lester Malizia, a Westminster alumnus who spent 20 years as artistic director of Seaside Music Theater, a leading professional theater in Daytona Beach, Fla.  During his time at Seaside, Malizia directed over 85 productions and produced the first staged production of the Tony Award-winning musical Million Dollar Quartet, which moved on to Broadway after development at Seaside under Malizia's guidance.  He was the founding director of the Rogue Theater in Orlando, Fla., where he directed the Florida premiere of Brad Frazier's Unidentified Human Remains and The True Nature of Love.  Malizia was one of the architects of the MFA Musical Theater program at the University of Central Florida and taught and directed the MFA classes.  He is a past chairman of the Professional Division of the Southeastern Theater Conference and served on the board of the National Alliance for Musical Theater for eight years.  He has been awarded the Distinguished Career Award by the Florida Theater Conference, the Richard Fallon Award for Innovative Leadership in the Theater, and the Volusia Arts Council Award for Leadership in the Arts.
