Diversity Services Office Announces Black History Month Activities

Westminster College's Office of Diversity Services has announced its schedule of events in observance of Black History Month.  All programs are free and open to the public.

Open Mic Night is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 16, from 8-10 p.m. in the Berlin Student Lounge of McKelvey Campus Center.  Westminster alumna Joselyn Parker, spoken word poet and national recording artist, will be featured. 

Balafon West African Dance Ensemble (website) will perform Saturday, Feb. 18, at 6 p.m. in Orr Auditorium.  The ensemble provides a woman-centered perspective on West African tradition and culture as a source of healing and balance by providing education and entertainment to audiences of all nationalities.   

Best-selling author, editor, and TV host Keith Boykin (website) will speak on "One More River to Cross: Black and Gay in America" Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. in Wallace Memorial Chapel.  A book signing will follow the program. 

Total Package Band (website) from Youngstown, Ohio, will present "The History of Black Music" Friday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. in Berlin Student Lounge.  The band plays a variety of music, from R&B and funk to line dance, jazz, and pop.

Events are sponsored by Westminster's Office of Diversity Services, Black Student Union, Student Government Association and its Diversity Committee, and Diversity Symposium.
