Recital to Feature Music Faculty and Alumnus

Posted on Monday, August 22, 2011

Dr. Matthew McCright, 1999 Westminster College alumnus, and Dr. Nancy Zipay DeSalvo, Westminster associate professor of music, will present a unique duo-piano recital Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in Orr Auditorium.  The concert is free and open to the public.

The recital of famous orchestra pieces transcribed for two pianos will feature Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker Suite, Dukas' L'Apprenti Sorcier, Borodin's Polovetsian Dances, and Bernstein's "Overture" to Candide.

McCright, a member of the piano faculty at Carleton College in Minneapolis, maintains an active freelance schedule. He is the curator of the Open Doors music series that partners performing artists with charitable causes and is housed at Saints Martha and Mary Episcopal Parish, where he is pianist-in-residence. He will launch The Composer's Project, a nationwide program that features emerging composers.

McCright, a Greenville native, has performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe with ensembles, chamber music groups, concert series, and music festivals. He performs works by living composers, spanning both traditional and contemporary pieces. Recent projects include the CD release of Second Childhood and an upcoming disc of the piano works of Minnesota composer Gene Gutchë.

While at Westminster, McCright studied with DeSalvo. He earned his master of music degree in piano from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati and completed a doctor of musical arts degree in piano performance at the University of Minnesota.

DeSalvo, a Steinway Artist, teaches piano, accompanying, and music theory; performs solo recitals; accompanies visiting guest artists; and travels extensively as a professional accompanying pianist and chamber music collaborator.  Guest solo appearances have included performances with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.  A member of the Westminster faculty since 1991, DeSalvo earned an undergraduate degree from Youngstown State University, master's degree from Manhattan School of Music, and doctorate from The Cleveland Institute of Music.
