Secondary Education Minors Conducted Family Literacy Night

Westminster College secondary education minors conducted "March Madness: A Family Literacy Event" March 29 at Campbell (Ohio) Middle School that was attended by more than 140 students and parents.
The Westminster students are from the secondary education literacy class "Reading in the Content Area" taught by Shannon Liposky, Westminster adjunct faculty in education.
The evening's activities included instruction in three literacy strategies that could be used in many content areas. Westminster students were responsible for planning and teaching Cubing, SQ3R, and Word Splash strategies to small groups of middle school students. Snacks and a prize drawing followed the instruction session.
Dr. Eileen Morelli, Westminster associate professor of education who has experience organizing a number of literacy events, assisted Liposky and her students with the planning.
Each Campbell student received two books provided through funding from Westminster's Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
