Professor to Speak on Encouraging Women through Math and Mentoring at Faculty Forum

Posted on Wednesday, September 29, 2010

Dr. Pamela Richardson, Westminster College assistant professor of mathematics, will speak on "Encouraging Women through Mathematics and Mentoring" at Faires Faculty Forum Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 11:40 a.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater of the McKelvey Campus Center.

Richardson has been involved with the Carleton College Summer Mathematics Program, a National Science Foundation-funded program designed to support women in their study of mathematics, for more than 10 years as a student, researcher, teacher, and mentor. She will describe the program, its goals, and her experience teaching Lie theory (a mathematical discipline developed by Norwegian mathematician Sophus Lie that brings together ideas from abstract algebra, topology, calculus, and physics) this summer.

Faculty Forum was established in 1990 by Dr. Barbara Faires, Westminster professor of mathematics emerita, during her term as Dean of the College and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Faculty members from all disciplines volunteer to present lectures on their current research, artistic productions, and/or scholarship of teaching and learning. Each forum presents new ideas with innovative lecture techniques.

Richardson, who joined the Westminster faculty in 2006, earned an undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.
