Posted on Monday, March 1, 2010

Six Westminster College students represented Rwanda in their first international Model United Nations Conference Jan. 28-31 at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec.

Senior international politics major Ethan Frey led the Westminster delegation. He is a son of Nancy Frey of Wilkes-Barre and a graduate of Elmer L. Meyers High School.

The remaining Westminster students are all political science majors:

Sophomore James Beaudry is a son of Holly Beaudry and Robert Beaudry, both of Fairport, N.Y., and a graduate of Fairport High School.

Sophomore Steven Fawcett is a son of James Fawcett and Carmen Johnson of Wexford and a graduate of Pine-Richland High School.

Sophomore Katelyn Moga is a daughter of Timothy and Pamela Moga of Ashtabula, Ohio, and a graduate of Edgewood High School. In addition to the Rwanda committees, Moga was selected to participate in a crisis committee that simulated the 1970 Indo-Pakistani conflict.

Sophomore Alex Scull is a son of Thomas and Stephanie Scull of DuBois and a graduate of DuBois Area High School.

Freshman Leah Wilson is a daughter of John and Barbara Wilson of Wellsville, Ohio, and a graduate of Beaver Local High School.

The students were accompanied by Dr. Michael Aleprete, Westminster assistant professor of political science and Model U.N. adviser.

According to Aleprete, about 1,800 participants represented 75 schools, including Ivy League schools, top Model U.N. programs, military academies, and elite liberal arts schools.

"McGill's conference was very competitive, drawing many of the best Model United Nations programs from North America," Aleprete said. "The Westminster delegation felt they gained a great deal of experience."
