History Professor Presented Paper at National Meeting

Posted on Thursday, January 14, 2010

Dr. Timothy Cuff, Westminster College associate professor of history, presented a paper at the annual meeting of the Social Science History Association Nov. 12-15 in Long Beach, Calif.

His co-authored paper, "Stature Change and Variation in Late 19th-Century Scotland: Preliminary Findings from Scottish Soldiers and Citizens," was presented at one of two sessions on anthropometric history which Cuff organized.

The paper is the result of collaboration with Dr. Paul Riggs, assistant professor of history at Valdosta State University, and was partially funded by a Westminster College McCandless Research Award.

The research investigated the physical stature of Scots near the turn of the 20th century using data collected and published by Scottish anthropologist and statistician James F. Tocher. The paper documented the stature advantage of Scots over other population groups in the United Kingdom at the time and suggested a relationship between the arrival in Scotland of the 1889 influenza pandemic and the unusually low adult stature of Scots who were in utero that year.

Cuff, a 1978 Westminster graduate and First Year Program coordinator, joined the Westminster faculty in 2000. He earned a master's from Bowling Green State University and a master's and Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh.
