Westminster College to Celebrate Constitution Day

Posted on Friday, September 4, 2009

Westminster College will celebrate Constitution Day 2009 with a presentation and student competition Thursday, Sept. 17, at 12:45 p.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater of the McKelvey Campus Center.

Constitution Day is observed each year on or about Sept. 17 to commemorate the signing of the Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787. Originally named Citizenship Day, recent legislation renamed it Constitution and Citizenship Day.

Dr. Angela Lahr, Westminster visiting assistant professor of history, will give the presentation addressing the religion clauses of the First Amendment (the Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause).

Following the presentation, teams and individuals will compete in a quiz bowl format. The winner will receive a $30 gift certificate to the Tavern on the Square; second place will receive a $10 gift card to Mugsies.

The event, which is sponsored by Westminster's Department of Religion, History, Philosophy and Classics, is free and open to the public. The competition is limited to Westminster students.
