Mathematics Professor Named Secretary-Elect of National Association

The Mathematics Association of America (MAA) Board of Governors announced the election of Dr. Barbara Faires, Westminster College professor of mathematics, as secretary-elect of the MAA.

Faires will hold the position until January 2010 when she will begin a five-year term as secretary. MAA is a 25,000-member organization focused on collegiate-level mathematics.

Faires served on MAA's Board of Governors and finance committee. She chaired the audit and budget committees; nominating and search committees; and the Committee on Sections. She was first vice president from 2004-2006. Most recently, Faires chaired one of the strategic planning working groups.

Faires remains active in the MAA's Allegheny Mountain Section, chairing committees and serving as coordinator of the Section's NExT Program from 2000-2008.

Faires, who has been with Westminster for over 30 years, earned an undergraduate degree from East Carolina University, master's from the University of South Carolina, and Ph.D. from Kent State University. During her tenure at Westminster, Faires served as chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and as vice president for Academic Affairs.
