Westminster College to Host Latin American Author at Bleasby Colloquium

Posted on Wednesday, March 11, 2009

Westminster College will host Horacio Castellanos Moya, acclaimed Latin American author, for the fourth 2008-2009 Bleasby Colloquium Thursday, March 26, at 7 p.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater of the McKelvey Campus Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Castellanos Moya was born in Honduras, grew up in El Salvador, and has lived in several Latin American countries, Spain, Germany, and Canada. He currently lives in Pittsburgh as the City of Asylum/Pittsburgh's exiled writer-in-residence. Following the publication of El Asco (Nausea), a novel exposing political crimes, anonymous death threats and fear for his life sent Castellanos Moya into exile.

He is the author of nine novels, five short story collections, and a book of essays. His novel Insensatez (Senselessness) was the first to be translated into English and received glowing reviews nationwide. One reviewer called it "very, very funny and terrifying at the same time. It is not like anything else you have ever read."

This colloquium is part of the George Bleasby Colloquia, a series of literary events in honor of the late Dr. Bleasby, who chaired the Department of English at Westminster from 1954-75.
