Professor Selected for Summer Study

Posted on Tuesday, May 6, 2008

Dr. Beverly Cushman, Westminster College assistant professor of religion and Christian education, was selected from a national pool to attend one of 17 summer study opportunities supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

The NEH is a federal agency that supports summer seminars and institutes at colleges and universities to enable teachers to work in collaboration and study with experts in humanities disciplines.

Cushman will participate in "Holy Land and Holy City in Classical Judaism, Christianity, and Islam," a five-week program to be held at the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies (U.K.). The institute will be directed by Irven Resnick of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Jeremy Cohen of Tel Aviv University.

The 25 faculty members selected to participate each receive a stipend to help defray their travel, study, and living expenses.

Approximately 375 faculty will participate in the 17 seminars and institutes and will teach over 50,000 American students the following year.

Cushman, who has been with Westminster since 2004, earned an undergraduate degree from Stetson University and masters and Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University.
