Mathematics Majors Make Presentations at Conference

Posted on Monday, February 18, 2008

Two Westminster College senior mathematics majors made presentations at the Nebraska Conference for Undergraduate Women in Mathematics held Feb. 8-10 at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

Nicole Panza, a daughter of Nancy Panza of Glenshaw and Louis Panza of Eighty Four, is a graduate of Shaler Area High School. She presented "Applications of Game Theory to Student Peer Evaluations."

Anna Maria Sparacino, a daughter of Christopher and Sharon Sparacino of Verona, is a graduate of Saint Joseph High School. She presented "The Evolution of the ABO Blood Group: A Mathematical Model."

Dr. Carolyn Cuff, Westminster College professor and chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, is faculty adviser to both students.

Over 200 undergraduate women participated in the conference, which was designed to give outstanding undergraduate women the opportunity to discuss their research and meet other women who share their interest in the mathematical sciences.

Oral presentations were made by more than 70 participants, and many poster presentations of the results of their research were shown. Participants had the opportunity to learn about life in graduate school from the perspective of current women graduate students from math departments across the country.
