The Westminster College Peace Studies Program and Student Government Association will host U.S. Navy Seaman Jonathan Hutto on Friday, Feb. 15, at 6 p.m. in Philips Lecture Hall of the Hoyt Science Resources Center. The event is free to the public.

Hutto, an active duty seaman assigned to the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt, is permitted to speak against the war in Iraq on his personal time, out of uniform, and off base. He and other service members, sponsored by antiwar military organizations, created a Web site (www.appealforredress.org) to provide a way for individual service members to appeal to their representatives and senators to urge an end to the war.

Hutto received the 2007 Social Courage Award from the Peace and Justice Studies Association. The award is given annually to an individual who exemplifies courage and honor in building a culture of peace and non-violence in the face of political pressure and social struggle.
