Field Station Sets Date for Annual Chipping Party

Posted on Monday, February 4, 2008

The Westminster College Field Station has set Saturday, Feb. 16, for its annual chipping party. The public is invited to attend.

Over 100 Christmas trees collected in January will be fed into an industrial chipper and converted into compostable wood chips.

"Since 2005, over 300 trees-more than two-and-a-half tons-have been rescued from the landfill and reincarnated," said Dr. Clarence Harms, Westminster College professor of biology emeritus and director of the Field Station.

Work begins at 9:30 a.m. and continues until noon, although volunteers need not stay the entire time. Hot chocolate and a warming fire will be provided, along with eye and ear protection. Workers should bring work gloves, friends, and family.

The Field Station is located east of Westminster College at 937 Fayette-New Wilmington Road. Visit www.westminster.edu/green for more information.

Contact Harms at (724) 946-8520 or e-mail harmsc@westminster.edu for additional information.
