Professor to Read and Comment on Poetry

Posted on Tuesday, January 29, 2008

Dr. James Perkins, Westminster professor English, will be the featured speaker at Faires Faculty Forum Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 11:40 a.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater in the McKelvey Campus Center.

For "Selected Poetry 1973-2008: The Westminster Years," Perkins will read and comment on a selection of poetry he wrote during his 35 years at Westminster. Originally hired to teach poetry writing, he now concentrates on teaching public relations, but has never broken the poetry habit.

Faculty Forum was established in 1990 by Dr. Barbara Faires, Westminster professor of mathematics, during her term as Dean of the College and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Faculty members from all disciplines volunteer to present lectures on their current research, artistic productions, and/or scholarship of teaching and learning. Each forum presents new ideas with innovative lecture techniques.

Perkins, who has been with Westminster since 1973, earned his undergraduate degree from Centre College, a master's from Miami University, and Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee. He has written, co-authored, or edited numerous publications, including three chapbooks of poetry: The Amish 2 Perceptions (1976); The Woodcarver (1978); and The Amish 2 Perceptions 2 (1981).

Contact Perkins at (724) 946-7347 or e-mail jperkins@westminster.edu for additional information.
