English Professor Presents at Modern Language Association

Posted on Friday, January 18, 2008

Dr. Bethany Hicok, Westminster associate professor of English, presented as part of two panels at the meeting of the Modern Language Association held Dec. 27-30 in Chicago.

Her paper, "Inviting Our Students to Join the Scholarly Conversation," was included in the panel on "The Undergraduate Student as Scholar: Programs and Curricula." Papers on this panel were selected for publication in a special volume by the Council on Undergraduate Research, an organization that promotes research among students and faculty at predominantly undergraduate institutions like Westminster.

"The paper is about the Westminster College English program and how Westminster, in general, promotes scholarly work among our undergraduates," Hicok said. "The Westminster College English program envisions its undergraduates as scholars from the beginning by placing scholarly conversation, rather than content, at the center of its curriculum."

"Bethany first began presentations on undergraduate research collaboration in the humanities for a Westminster faculty workshop in 2004. She has continued to be a leader in the area by presenting a model that has the student as both an independent researcher and a collaborator on faculty-initiated research," according to Dr. Sandra Webster, Westminster professor of psychology and faculty development officer.

Hicok also chaired a panel on "Writing the Modernist City: Urban Experiences and Poetic Language."

Hicok, who has been with Westminster since 2001, earned an undergraduate degree from Russell Sage College and master's and Ph.D. from the University of Rochester.
