Westminster College will host the fourth annual Alternative Gift Market in the Carlson Atrium of the McKelvey Campus Center, Dec. 5-6.
Sponsored by Westminster's Young Presbyterian Scholars (YPS), this year's market has expanded to two days. Hours will be Wednesday 4-9 p.m. and Thursday 9 a.m.-7 p.m. The event is an outreach and education project and will be staffed by students.
Joining YPS this year are campus chapters of the Sierra Student Coalition, The Newman Club, Habitat for Humanity, and Amnesty International, as well as Shoulder to Shoulder Pittsburgh, and the Kenya Children's Project. Wendy Farmerie, who owns The Silk Road in New Wilmington, will also offer global items that support businesses dedicated to fair trade.
Alternative Gifts International (AGI) is a nonprofit, interfaith agency that educates about global needs and raises funds through its markets. Designated grants are sent to established international projects for relief and development which have been researched by AGI.
Some of the projects that will be displayed at the Westminster market include Solar Entrepreneurs (Kenya), Children with Cancer (Tanzania and East Africa), Green Justice (Haiti), and Soothe Their Hunger Pangs (U.S.A.).
