The Westminster College Department of Modern Languages and the Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, as part of the new Language in Motion program on campus, are working with language teachers to sponsor a day-long seminar for about 60 Wilmington Area High School Latin and French students on April 17.

The seminar features French teacher Mary Beth Acker, Latin teacher Marylee Houston, and Westminster College student leaders Rachael Cooper, a senior French and fine art major from New Castle; Morgane Longello, a sophomore French major from Beaver Falls; Jennifer Gross, a senior French major from Eldred; and Jared Polish, a senior Latin major from Austintown, Ohio. Milagros Swerdlow, lecturer in Spanish, is the coordinator of Language in Motion and of this program

As part of Language in Motion, this program allows high school students to benefit from the experience of advanced language college students and students who have traveled abroad. After morning history, grammar, and literature debates, the high school students will break into small groups to create materials for a five-minute lesson which targets first-grade students in Latin or French. After teachers evaluate the lesson plans, a few will be chosen for students to teach at the Wilmington Area Elementary School.

The Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning was developed to advance world-class teaching at Westminster and enrich K-12 education through outreach programs for area educators.
