Westminster College Choir Returns from Southern California Tour

Posted on Wednesday, February 20, 2002

The Westminster College Concert Choir and Chamber Singers have returned home from a successful performance tour of Southern California.

Under the direction of Dr. Robin A. Lind, the 38-member choir performed concerts at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Santa Barbara, Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church is Los Alamitos, Faith Presbyterian Church in San Diego, and Westminster Presbyterian Church in Escondido.

"I've never had such a positive experience, said Brad Linn, a senior history major from Webster, N.Y.  "I especially enjoyed seeing the expressions on the faces of people we were singing to."

The choir performed a wide variety of sacred and secular works, including those by American composers, Aaron Copland, William Billings, Virgil Thompson, Byron Smith, and Mack Wilberg.  Jeannetta Antus, a junior music education major from Hermitage, and Dr. Elizabeth Harrison, assistant professor of music and college organist at Westminster College, accompanied the group.

The choir got to see more than churches on the tour, but singing was the most important aspect of the trip.  "Even though most of us got sick when we went whale watching, we all came together to sing that night," said Donna Macurdy, senior music education major from Cabot.  "This showed me how dedicated we are towards each other and our gift of singing."

"Students met graduates of Westminster College at every concert, and were able to share their love of singing and the College with them," said Lind.  "After each concert members of the choir spent the evening at homes of the local parishioners, and returned with tales of magnificent homes on the ocean."

Each year the Westminster College Choir tours in January, and Greg Drylie, a sophomore music education major from Oakmont, summed up the trip for most of the choir.  "Every performance was a new experience for me.  It was exciting to anticipate the reaction of the audience, and experience the energy of every song."
