Westminster College announces a Mathematic and Computer Science Colloquium Thursday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. in Hoyt Science Resources Center room 152.

The event features Bob Roos, assistant professor of computer science at Allegheny College.

"My title, A Little Bit Off,' does not refer to the speaker, although you can judge that for yourself," said Roos. "It refers to the most simple technique employed in steganography - the art of hidden messages - in which a simple bit is modified in each pixel of an image file in order to encode a message.

"Recent news reports have claimed that terrorists use steganographic techniques, which will lead us into a description of some of the more common ways of representing images. I also talk about some related issues such as digital watermarking."

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Dr. Barbara Faires, (724) 946-7293 or e-mail faires@westminster.edu.
