Westminster College invites all creative storytellers to share their talents with the Titan Film Festival: The Thriller Edition competition. Community filmmakers of all ages and skill levels are enouraged to submit their spooky mini movies in the contest.
“We are excited to offer this competition to more than just the Westminster community,” said Kandice Hartner ’12, competition organizer and a School of Communication faculty member. “With the ice cream cone as our prop, we are interested to see how everyone gets creative and tells their story. Get together with friends, coworkers or even just yourself— there is no limit on how big your team can be or how much fun you can have.”
With categories for novice, advanced and audience choice, community members can be seasoned or beginning filmmakers, but they must all include specific elements to be eligible.
Films must:
• Be five minutes or less
• Fit within the genre of supernatural, aliens, eco-thriller, monsters, zombies, general science fiction, or cloak-and-dagger
• Include an ice cream cone prop as a scene element or used in the background
• Be family-friendly films and appropriate for all age
• Be submitted via YouTube or a similar platform.
Entries are due by Monday, Oct. 14, and winners will be announced at a showcase event at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, in Mueller Theater of McKelvey Campus Center on Westminster’s campus. The showcase will present several awards including the fan favorite award determined by audience vote.
For filmmakers who would like to learn more about movie planning, shot organization and filming techniques, Westminster College is hosting a smartphone moviemaking workshop from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, in the Dietz Sullivan Lecture Hall in Hoyt Science Center. There is a registration fee for attendees and participants under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. For additional registration information, please click here.
This Titan Film Festival is sponsored by the student newspaper The Holcad, Titan Radio, Westminster Cable, wcn247.com, Westminster’s School of Communication and Westminster’s Beyond the Quad Art Series, which encourages relationships and activities between students and the local community.
“Storytelling through movies is a powerful way to connect and we can’t wait to see the stories that the students and community members want to tell,” said Dr. Helen Boylan, faculty fellow for community engagement and professor of chemistry.
