Westminster College’s Sodexo Dining Services, together with the Office of Professional Development and Community Engagement, are collaborating with New Wilmington’s farmers’ market, the Fresh Marketplace, on an event for Hunger Awareness Month.
The Family Day Marketplace will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Fresh Marketplace, 129 Chestnut St., New Wilmington, one block north of Westminster’s Old Main building. The event is concurrent with Westminster College’s Family Day activities, and families are encouraged to attend and take in the live music, food offerings, raffles and vendors.
Area craft and artisan vendors are being sought for the event. Vendor applications will be accepted until Wednesday, Sept. 4. Student vendors will pay $5, and others will pay $15. Vendors will set up outside the Fresh Marketplace, adjacent to Vine Street in the gravel parking lot, and should bring their own table and/or tent.
Proceeds from the Family Day Marketplace will benefit Lawrence County Empty Bowls, a program whose mission is to raise awareness about food insecurity in the county, as well as provide free meals and activities for local children in need during the summer months.
“Prior to the pandemic, we had hosted an annual event, the Lakeside Craft Fair, as a fundraiser for Hunger Awareness Month,” said Mona Moufid, marketing specialist for Sodexo Dining Services at Westminster and one of the event’s organizers. “In the new version of this event, we are collaborating with the Fresh Marketplace to expand vendor offerings and welcome Westminster families to the market.”
