Etty, a one-woman play based on the diaries and letters of Etty Hillesum, adapted and performed by Susan Stein, will be presented at 7 p.m., Monday, April 25, in Beeghly Theatre on the Westminster College campus.

Esther “Etty” Hillesum was the Dutch author of confessional letters and diaries which describe both her religious awakening and the persecutions of Jewish people in Amsterdam during the German occupation. She wrote about her loves, her work, her sense of humor and her deep sensuality while living in Amsterdam. In 1943, she was deported and killed in Auschwitz concentration camp at age 29.

Etty encompasses theatrical and educational experiences designed to challenge participants to reexamine assumptions about the Holocaust and explore issues of resistance, human rights, social justice and individual responsibility.

The performance, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Thomasses Family Endowment of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation in collaboration with America’s Hidden History cluster and Psychology of Prejudice courses at Westminster College.
