Meet Emily Cornman, one of 10 students selected for a 2020 Summer Research Fellowship. Emily, a senior biology and sociology major from Templeton, Pennsylvania, is passionate about clean water education and helping people live healthier lives. The summer fellowship has enabled Emily to gather data for her project, “Evaluating Wine to Water: Ceramic Silver-impregnated Pot and Candle Filters as a Sustainable Solution for the Global Water Crisis,” which examines three different types of household water filtration systems used in developing countries. Emily was mentored by Dr. Joseph Balczon, associate professor of biology.

For many Westminster students, the month of May brings travel. Be it a brief commute or a long road trip, students journey home to reunite with family and friends, often spending the end of the month celebrating the onset of summer at assorted Memorial Day picnics. For 24 Westminster College students and two professors in the All-College Honors Program, this past May brought a much grander adventure: a two-week travel course to Greece, where students experienced firsthand many of the cultural sites they had read about in their first year of honors classes.

Junior biochemistry major and Honors Program scholar Sarah Harris earned Honorable Mention of the Barry Goldwater Scholarship for her research with Dr. Patrick Lackey on the molecular-level processes that occur during cell division. She was nominated for the award last month based on her academic excellence and promising undergraduate research.
