Summer Science Splash Camp is a week-long residential camp—an immersion in scientific observations and experiments for middle-school students—on the campus of Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA. Campers will spend their days in the lab and in the field exploring technology and the natural world. Sessions will be led by Westminster faculty and assisted by Westminster students. Evening activities will include games, sports, arts, hanging out with new friends, and MORE SCIENCE.
Campers do not need to have an advanced understanding of science to attend, but they are expected to be excited and motivated to learn!
Choose from two sessions:
Campers should arrive Sunday afternoon between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. and depart Friday afternoon around 2 p.m. Campers will be engaged in team competitions; therefore, campers must stay for the entire week.
Note: Each session provides the same experience, so campers should only register for one session.
Thanks to the financial support of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and the II-VI Foundation, we are able to offer this week-long residential camp at a cost of $450 per camper. If you register prior to March 1, 2019, you pay the discounted rate of only $400 per camper! For this you get a week of top-notch science instruction, lodging, meals, snacks, supervised activities, camp shirts, and a variety of other goodies and prizes (>$1000 value).
The camp is open to students who are 6th, 7th, or 8th graders in the 2018-19 school year. Sixty campers per session will be grouped into five teams for the week, learning and competing together.
Five Westminster College science faculty will lead each group of 12 campers through a set of engaging science activities. Additional staff will support some of the evening activities.
Westminster College students and alumni will assist in each lab session, guide campers around the Westminster College campus, and oversee evening activities with one counselor for every nine campers. A “House Parent” will be present in the residence halls with the campers and counselors for some additional adult oversight.
Academic Director: Dr. Craig Caylor, Associate Professor of Physics. Dr. Caylor has been a professor at Westminster since 2001, following his Ph.D. in experimental physics at Cornell University.
Administrative Assistants: Tauni Caylor and Doreen Matune.
