Children’s author Jonah Winter to speak at Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, PA –Jonah Winter, an award-winning author of more than 30 nonfiction picture books that promote social justice, facts, and artistic expression, will discuss his craft at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, in the Witherspoon Rooms of the McKelvey Campus Center at Westminster College.

Winter often writes about historical figures who have faced and overcome adversity, such as baseball player Roberto Clemente, U.S. President Barack Obama, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

“I would hope my biographies would open the minds of children to the value of tolerance toward people who are ‘different,’ toward people who’ve been discriminated against, toward people who’ve had the courage to just ‘be themselves’,” said Winter.

Winter’s books include New York Times Best Illustrated Books Diego, Here Comes The Garbage Barge! and Ruth Bader Ginsburg: The Case Of RBG Vs. Inequality, along with Jane Addams Children’s Book Award recipient and Kirkus Prize finalist Lillian’s Right to Vote, New York Times Notable Children’s Book My Name is James Madison Hemings, New York Times bestseller Barack, and The Secret Project, which received five starred reviews.

Winter’s books will be available for purchase at the Westminster College Book Store, which will remain open during the event. A book signing will follow his presentation.
