NEW WILMINGTON, PA – Westminster College will host Botanical Threads, an exhibition of fiber works made with natural dyes, in the campus’ Foster Art Gallery in Patterson Hall through Oct. 14.

The exhibition will feature the works of the late Peggy Cox, professor of art at Westminster, and fellow fiber artist Mary Lou Alexander. Both used laborious methods to eco-print on various fabrics using natural dyes.

The exhibition is also a celebration of the life and work of Cox, who passed away on July 16.

Cox, who earned her undergraduate degree in studio art from the University of Louisville and her master of fine arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania, joined the Westminster faculty in 1985. She taught courses in painting, drawing and collage, and recently was exploring the world of textile and fiber art using natural dyes.

In 1991, Cox received a Fulbright research grant to live and paint landscapes in Iceland for the summer. Subsequent grants from the American Scandinavian Foundation and development grants from Westminster College funded two more summer trips to Iceland. Cox’s artwork has been exhibited regionally, nationally and in Iceland.

A memorial service for Cox will be held in conjunction with the Botanical Threads exhibition at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8. The gallery will open for the memorial at 10 a.m., and the memorial will then move to the lobby of Beeghly Theatre at 11 a.m.  A reception and walk to Westminster College’s Field Station will follow.

The exhibition is free and open to the public. The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
