Westminster College Wind Ensemble earns American Prize

NEW WILMINGTON, PA – The Westminster College Wind Ensemble is the winner of The American Prize in Band Performance in the college/university division for 2017-18.

Selected from applications submitted from all across the United States, the Westminster College Wind Ensemble is under the direction of Dr. R. Tad Greig, director of instrumental activities and professor of music at Westminster College.

Established in 1997, the Westminster College Wind Ensemble is one of three bands at the College including the Westminster Symphonic Band and the Titan Marching Band. Members, selected through audition, perform a variety of established and new works. The ensemble has received a number of commendations, most notably three guest appearances at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association All-State Conference over the past decade. Along with their concert performances, the wind ensemble has accompanied numerous student and faculty soloists and guest artists. 

Greig, who joined the Westminster faculty in 1995, has been a guest conductor, clinician and guest lecturer throughout the Eastern United States. As a guest conductor, he has worked with junior high, senior high and collegiate bands throughout his career. He earned an undergraduate degree from Grove City College, a master’s from Youngstown State University, and Ph.D. from Kent State University.

The American Prize is a series of new, non-profit, competitions unique in scope and structure, designed to recognize and reward the best performing artists, ensembles and composers in the United States based on submitted recordings. The American Prize has attracted hundreds of qualified contestants from all 50 states since its founding, has awarded more than $50,000 in prizes in all categories since 2010, and is presented annually in many areas of the performing arts.
