A group of Westminster College early childhood/special and secondary education majors participated in the Governor's Institute Extravaganza event at Wilmington Elementary School this past February. The event was held for local preschool and kindergarten children and their families. The Westminster students facilitated activities that focused on social-emotional development, literacy, math and health.

For sophomore early childhood education/special education major Daliswa Kumalo, visiting Wilmington Elementary was a marvelous experience.

“I feel so fortunate that I had the opportunity to go to Wilmington and help promote growth for the students and their families,” shared Kumalo. “Social-emotional development is remarkably underrated; however, it plays such a significant role in the advancement of a child.”

Using math demonstrations, puppet shows, book readings and movement, the students were able to show the families in attendance how to support the development of their children. Presenting this idea in a fun way was sophomore Emily Russell’s favorite part.

“It was great to interact with the students and their parents and talk to them about the positive benefits of focusing on social-emotional development,” shared Russell.

The extravaganza was organized as part of the Governor’s Institute of PA’s initiative to foster collaboration between community and local school district early childhood programs. The Lawrence county chapter, including lecturer of education Diana Reed, coordinated the event.
