Junior early childhood/special education majors taking “Testing and Assessment,” taught by Dr. Alison DuBois, assistant professor of early childhood education, special education and counseling at Westminster College, held classes on-site at George Washington Intermediate School in New Castle, PA this semester. In “Testing and Assessment,” the students learned the theory behind creating reliable and valid assessments and created assessments to use with young students to help increase reading and comprehension skills.

The Westminster students worked with fourth grade students in Ms. Alicia Cook and Mr. Jason Girman’s learning support classes at George Washington Intermediate. Each class began with an hour of direct instruction from either Dr. DuBois, the building principal, or one of the special education teachers. Afterwards, the Westminster students had an hour and a half clinical experience of working one on one with a student from one of the participating classes.

At the end of the weekly class, the Westminster students de-briefed the experience, highlighted what skills went well and identified improvements they can make in the following week's class session.
