Westminster College Preschool Lab to Present Summer Science Camp, June 13-18

The Westminster College Preschool Lab will present a Reggio Emilia-inspired summer science camp for five- and six-year-olds, June 13 – 18. Registration is $125 per child and is open to the public.

This year’s camp will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.

“We are excited about our Reggio Emilia inspired camp this year and look forward to providing the children with exciting opportunities to learn basic science concepts through creative thinking, art projects, yoga, and on campus field trips,” said Debi Roud, head teacher at Westminster’s Preschool Lab and co-director of the camp.

The camp curriculum is grounded on this idea and has been designed to offer multi-layered, outdoor nature experiences to support children’s learning and creativity, featuring five themes, including: Friendly Forest, Busy Birds, Lively Leaves, Wiggly Worms, and Water Works.

“The camp was developed by three remarkable early childhood/special education majors - Ellen DeFrances, Amanda Fagley, and Sara Sutter because of their interest in quality early learning and the Reggio Emilia approach,” said Diana Reed, lecturer of education and co-director of the camp.  

Camp activities will include art, crafts, yoga, field trips to various campus locations, and experiments.

The camp is inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy of education that originated in Northern Italy. One of the key concepts of a Reggio Emilia approach encompasses the idea that “all children are capable, passionate and creative thinkers, who construct their own knowledge of the world.”
