Westminster College Announces Winner of David W. Edward Entrepreneurship Scholarship Competition

Baylee Felger, sophomore business administration major at Westminster College, was named winner of the 2016 David W. Edward Entrepreneurship Scholarship competition.

The judged competition conducted by Westminster’s School of Business with funding from the Edward Trust in Youngstown, Ohio, required students to prepare and present a business plan depicting the creation of a new or improved business, product, service, or combination of the three.

Felger’s business plan, “Windswept Hill Kennels,” encompassed building and operating a special forces dog training facility.

“My plan was inspired by my brother, Glenn, my hometown K9 officer,” said Felger. “I have done most of my research through him and his dog, Dany, from the time they began their career together.”

“While this service is not unique, Ms. Felger is capitalizing on a market that appears to have a lot of growth potential because the market is still in the developmental stage” said David Smith, associate professor of accounting and the competition’s coordinator. 

“Throughout the creation of my plan, I had the opportunity to be right in the mix of things with my brother’s team, and have participated in their training and home life,” said Felger. “They helped me to acquire the information I needed to focus on the main points of my business plan. The development of my plan consisted of crafting a schedule for the use of funds and key success factors that would encourage investors.”

Felger is the daughter of Bart and Penny Felger, and is a graduate of Springfield Local High School in New Middletown, Ohio.

The competition judges included Westminster employees Chris Miller, controller, Janet Smith, business manager, and Dr. Gail Miller, professor of business Emeritus.
