Senior political science major at Westminster College, Matthew Romeo, has been accepted into the Peace Corps. Following graduation, Romeo will serve for two years in Peru.

“The combination of my love for travel and desire to help other people seemed to fit perfectly into the ideals and goals of the Peace Corps,” said Romeo. “I am very excited for the opportunity to aid a country that has given me so many memorable life experiences during my semester abroad.”

While serving as a youth development facilitator, Romeo will work with the Peruvian government and schools to identify and aid at-risk youth, helping young people in rural or marginalized areas by increasing their personal ability to improve their quality of life in their communities.

Romeo will organize job fairs, after school and summer programs; educate teachers about instruction techniques; teach the importance of money management; and demonstrate the importance of community development.

Romeo, a son of Thomas and Cathy Romeo and a graduate of Atholton High School in Laurel, MD, spent the fall semester of 2014 studying abroad in Peru.

Romeo is Westminster College’s second political science major to be accepted by the Peace Corps in the past three years.
