As part of the Bleasby Colloquia series, Westminster College’s English and Public Relations programs hosted Paula Closson Buck, award-winning author and professor of English at Bucknell University, at 7 p.m., November 19 in Mueller Theater, McKelvey Campus Center.

"A formidable writer, Buck will read from her latest novel, ‘Summer on the Cold War Planet,” set in Greece and Germany when the Berlin Wall was falling," said Dr. David Swerdlow, professor of English. "Buck's work ripples with intensity, and she gives a great reading of both her fiction and poetry."

In “Summer on the Cold War Planet,” Lyddie, a young American art historian, returns to the divided city of Berlin to uncover her husband’s secret. There, she falls under the spell of an exiled East German artist.

The novel encompasses the fine line that separates betrayal from allegiance and hope from desperation as Lyddie tries to recover her lost and damaged soul amongst people she simultaneously loves and mistrusts.

The George Bleasby Colloquia series of literary events is an event in honor of the late Dr. Bleasby, who chaired the Westminster College Department of English from 1954-1975. These programs are presentations by department faculty, featured speakers, and majors on individual scholarship, interests and creative projects.
