A few weeks ago, experts in Westminster’s psychology program and school of business sat down to plan the new curriculum for the upgraded human resources management major for the 2015 – 2016 school year.

Previously called “psychology – human resources,” the interdisciplinary major is now named “human resources management” and is administered by the psychology program as part of an ongoing collaboration with the school of business. Westminster also offers a minor in human resources through the school of business.

“We tweaked its name and revamped the program’s curriculum requirements to match the integrative major components,” said Dr. Mandy Medvin, professor and program chair in psychology. “In a survey of 23 institutions, we found that several schools have two tracks for this area—a psychology one, and a business one. Instead, we have an interdisciplinary major, and a disciplinary minor. Only a minority of schools have this type of curriculum in either discipline, so our program is unique.”

A major in human resources management requires 24 credit hours in business, economics, human resources, and accounting; 28 credit hours in psychology; an internship in human resources; and a four-credit elective in organizations and management, marketing, or cognition.
