Westminster College Mathematics Student Gets Second Research Paper Published in Mathematics Journal

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Connor MacKenzie, a Westminster College senior mathematics major, was recently notified that one of his mathematics research papers was accepted for publication in the Journal of Classical Analysis.

"Generalizations and Specializations of Generating Functions for Jacobi, Gegenbauer, Chebyshev and Legendre Polynomials with Definite Integrals" was coauthored with Dr. Howard Cohl, corresponding author and mathematician at the Applied and Computational Mathematics Division of National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). During the summer of 2012, MacKenzie worked with Cohl as part of NIST's Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program in Gaithersburg, Md.

SURF students work for 11 weeks, contributing to an ongoing research project under the guidance of a NIST scientist or engineer from one of the institute's six laboratories.  In a competitive application process, NIST awards about 100 fellowships each year.

This is the second paper that has been published as a result of Mackenzie's fellowship. "Generalizations of Generating Functions for Hypergeometric Orthogonal Polynomials with Definite Integrals" was published in the Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications. It was coauthored by Cohl and Dr. Hans Volkmer, faculty at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.

MacKenzie is completing his research as an all-college honors student at Westminster and is applying to graduate programs in mathematics. He is a son of Dwayne and Amy MacKenzie and a graduate of Ephrata High School.
