Westminster College Students and Public Relations Lecturer Attend Media Convention, Present Research

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Westminster College's student newspaper Editor-in-Chief Melissa Dubrawka and News Editor Maggie Hess joined their adviser, Westminster Lecturer of Public Relations Delores Natale, at the National College Media Convention in October in New Orleans.
The group joined more than 2,300 students, journalists and advisers at the conference. The event included sessions and workshops on a variety of topics, including reporting and editing tips, information on a career in freelancing, organizing multimedia operations, copyright and fair use in the Internet era, and practicing an ethic of empathy. The keynote speaker was Hoda Kotb from the "Today Show" and "Dateline NBC," who highlighted her personal experiences in the field.
"This conference is very beneficial for our student publications," Natale said. "Each year the Holcad editors make sweeping changes to the publication after attending the conference. This year, in particular, we received overwhelmingly positive reaction and comments related to the changes in our publication."
While at the conference Natale and Dubrawka presented "Survey Says: Build a Better Survey for Student Media." Natale discussed using survey methods to determine readership of college media, and Dubrawka presented the student viewpoint of surveys, to an audience of more than 25 students and faculty.
Natale also attended sessions designed specifically for advisers, including one on the topic of how to teach writing, from which she obtained a grading rubic she plans to utilize in Westminster's journalism courses. Natale, who earned undergraduate and master's degrees from Westminster, joined the faculty in 2001.
Dubrawka, a senior English major, is a daughter of David and Sheila Dubrawka of Tionesta and a graduate of West Forest High School.
Hess, a junior English major, is a daughter of Karen Jasper of Everett and a graduate of Chestnut Ridge High School.
