Westminster College's Alexandra Taylor Receives Newman Civic Fellow Award

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Westminster College junior early childhood/special education major Alexandra Taylor was among 181 students from 36 states honored as Newman Civic Fellows by Campus Compact. 

The award recognizes college student leaders who demonstrate an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country.

"These students represent the next generation of public problem-solvers and civic leaders," said Maureen Curley, Campus Compact president.  "They serve as national examples of the role that higher education can, and does, play in building a better world."

Taylor is actively involved in a variety of leadership organizations, including Sigma Kappa, Student Westminster Admissions Team, Fresh Start, Student Alumni Association, Kappa Delta Pi, and Lambda Sigma. Taylor also serves as a camp counselor at Royal Family Kids Camp (RFKC), a national non-profit organization that provides summer camp experience for physically, mentally, emotionally, and sexually abused children (ages 7-11).  Taylor also assists in the year-round fundraising and promotional efforts necessary to support the tuition free attendance of the campers.

Campus Compact wrote on its website, "Alex's participation in these groups has allowed her to develop leadership skills, demonstrate commitment to her community, good judgment, and responsible citizenry. Alex has consistently been a leader among her peers. She is trustworthy, reliable, and has shown deep commitment to community-based involvement and solutions. She is a leader in civic-engagement issues, and she is an inspiration to others."

Taylor was nominated for the award by Westminster College President Dr. Richard H. Dorman: "One of our goals at Westminster is to instill a sense of service and civic involvement in each of our students.  Alex's volunteerism and service efforts represent an excellent example of the outcomes we seek.  I am thrilled that she has been recognized nationally for her dedication to these ideals."

Taylor is a daughter of Brian and Elaine Taylor of New Wilmington and a graduate of Wilmington Area High School.
