NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Westminster College chemistry students Tyler Umstead and Lance Jubic will present research during the Environmental Programs Lunch Seminar March 12 at 12:45 p.m. in the Hoyt Science Research Center, room 291.

"Creation of a Website as a Means of Enhancing Collaboration of Volunteers for Alliance for Aquatic Resource Monitoring (ALLARM)" will review how the two chemistry majors, who had no web design background, taught themselves how to build a web site that relates to hydraulic fracturing and water quality in our region. They will demonstrate the unique features of their website, such as interactive maps of fracking sites and water quality measurements in our region, and discuss an iPhone application created by Assistant Professor of Mathematics Dr. Jeffrey Boerner that interfaces with their website. The overall goal of the website is to enhance collaboration of ALLARM volunteers in Lawrence and Mercer counties.

Umstead and Jubic were awarded Best Oral Presentation for this presentation at the Student Symposium in December. The event was hosted by Westminster Environmental Programs and co-sponsored by the Slippery Rock Watershed Coalition with support from the Drinko Center for Experiential Learning.  Oral and poster presentations were given by students from Westminster College, Slippery Rock University, Allegheny College, Butler Community College, Geneva College, University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, and Youngstown State University

Jubic, a junior biochemistry and molecular biology major, is a son of Gregory and Mary Jubic of Leechburg and a graduate of Kiski Area High School.

Umstead, a junior chemistry major, is a son of Daniel Umstead of Butler and a graduate of Slippery Rock Area High School.
