Westminster College Director of Library Services to Present at Faculty Forum

Posted on Thursday, January 24, 2013

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Erin Smith, director of library services and associate professor, will present at the Faires Faculty Forum Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 11:40 a.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater of the McKelvey Campus Center.

In her talk titled "A Really Useful Thing: An Exploration of Faculty-Created Library Assignments," Smith will share what she learned from her Westminster faculty colleagues about library assignments and their assessment of students' abilities to find and use information. Smith completed the research during her sabbatical to ensure that Westminster's library, which exists to support the information needs of its researchers - largely undergraduate students, was providing the resources and services consistent with classroom assignments.

Smith, who has been with Westminster since 2002, earned undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of Tennessee.

The Faculty Forum was established in 1990 by Dr. Barbara Faires, Westminster professor of mathematics emerita, during her term as dean of the college and vice president for academic affairs.  Faculty members from all disciplines volunteer to present lectures on their current research, artistic productions, and scholarship of teaching and learning.  Each forum presents new ideas with innovative lecture techniques.

Podcasts of the forums are available here.
