Seven Westminster College students majoring or minoring in sociology, child and family studies, criminal justice studies or legal studies were inducted into the International Sociology Honorary Society Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) this spring.

The initiates included Haley Domitrovich of Aliquippa, Pa., Tiffany Eaton of Zelienople, Pa., Jace Ebbitt of Cowansville, Pa., Emily Gellatly of Ravenna, Ohio, Alexis Jones of Northern Cambria, Pa., Christine Lowers of Masury, Ohio, and Shannon Sullivan of Pittsburgh.

The ceremony was attended by several of the 2019-20 initiates: AKD President Emily Cornman, AKD Treasurer Hannah Westwood and Jessica Reabe, as well as AKD Chapter Adviser and Professor of Sociology Dr. Kristin Park, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice Studies and Sociology Dr. Jamie Chapman and Professor of Political Science and Criminal Justice Studies Dr. Shannon Smithey.

To be eligible for induction a student must be a junior or senior with an overall 3.3 GPA and a 3.0 GPA in sociology, criminal justice studies, social science, international studies/peace and justice studies classes or in child and family studies, hold a top 35% class ranking and have completed four regular sociology, criminal justice studies or social science courses.

“We are extremely proud of our initiates. Their insights and questions during class periods enhance the learning experience for our students and us, and we enjoy reading their well-written, thoughtful papers and essays,” said Park. “That these students have continued to excel during these challenging times also speaks to their resilience and perseverance.”
