START Program

Westminster College’s Students at Risk Team (START) coordinates services for students who have been referred by faculty or administration as being at risk of failing or of not making satisfactory academic progress. The student will be contacted by a START member or designee, who may either offer support and advice, or refer the student to appropriate programs and services. START members are the Dean of Student Affairs, Associate Dean of Student Affairs, Registrar, Director of Disability Support Services, the College Counselor, the Head Football Coach, and a faculty representative who is appointed to the team by the Vice President of Academic Affairs. Professional consultants include the Director of Diversity Services, the Director of the Lifelong Learning Program, or other campus professionals as requested.

Referrals to or from START can be made with or without student consent as defined by FERPA [34 C.F.R. §99.31 (a) (1)] which allows disclosure of observations and educational records “to other school officials, including teachers, within the institution whom the institution has determined to have legitimate educational interests.” All matters discussed by START members are held in strictest confidence. Contact the Office of Student Affairs at ext. 7110 for further information about START.
